Sisterhood World Cup 2012 Begins

SISTERHOOD WORLD CUP 2012 KICKS OFF! 

Day 1

This day saw Future Talent run riot against newcomers Langata Barrracks and Barbarians, and Elizabeth Majuma refining her scoring prowess, talent and will power amongst the girls participating in this event was displayed to levels well above threshold. Zuhura Indusa joined Elizabeth Majuma to keep the top scorers’ race track on fire while the likes of Lilian Awuor and Millicent Mbeky settled for the second log. Langata Barracks failed to live to their armoury billing by receiving a five – nil thrashing by pool D top seeds; Future Talent. New girls on the competitive soccer log with beauty and finesse- Huruma Girls could not crack the solid Karen C defence and drawing 1-1. Today’s results have skewed the quarter final appearances towards Future Talent, Olympic A and Olympic B. Tournament favourites Sports for life shall have to wait longer to advance to the next stage while St. Christine’s and Karen C shall have to fight even harder for a ticket in the last eight stage.

Apart from the hot soccer action, the girls also received important information in a workshop held through the joint efforts of Girl power programme and Liverpool VCT. Amongst some of the items discussed at the workshop include Reproductive health, HIV AIDS awareness and general life skills.

SISTERHOOD WORLD CUP 2012 ON THIS WEEKEND

Sadili’ s Girl Power Clubs Programme this year brings the very unique 7 Aside Sisterhood World Cup tournament earlier than the year 2012 with a new array of awareness and educational activities. The event which shall use a girls’ only ‘world cup’ to promote HIV/AIDS awareness, Gender Mainstreaming and Gender Equality amongst Girls in and outside Nairobi has already received participatory confirmation from 16 acknowledged Girls’ teams. The event begins its preliminaries this Saturday 26^th May at Sadili Oval Sports Academy at 9AM, the Quarters and semi finals shall be  played on the 16^th of June and the finals shall be held on the 30^th of June at the same venue. The world cup which promises a lot of female soccer action, colour and success is proud to confirm the participation of Nairobi High Schools’ soccer Champions Olympic High School and Eastlands’ ever winning Future Talent side. Other teams to watch out for include the English Sponsored Sunderland Samba F.C and hosts Sadili soccer Academy. Notable inclusions in the draw include three-time Langata youth soccer league Girls Under 16 winners Makina Self Help and the hard fighting outfit that is Bavarians Fruitful soccer academy. Daughters of the Military based at the 7 Kenya Rifles battalion- the Langata Barracks High School shall also participate in the tournament where they shall fight it out with Kibera’ s Holy Unity and Nazarene schools for possible quarter final appearances.

Christine Madarah Feels Transformed

 HOW THE GIRL POWER CLUB HAS HELPED ME

HURUMA GIRLS SECONDARY SCHOOL

My name is Christine Madarah, a Form 3 student at Huruma Girls. I joined the Girl Power Club late last year and I must say it has been of great help not only to me but also to the entire school.
The Girl Power Club has equipped me with what I need to have as a growing young lady. The club has enabled me to achieve more that I thought I would never achieve, like for instance, before I joined the club, I couldn't stand before my class (of fifty) because of shyness and, of course, my low self esteem! Fortunately all this changed when I joined the club because there, I was able to realize that the whole world starts with me and therefore I had to be courageous and had to face it. As I am writing this letter, I have just come from singing confidently in front of the whole school at the assembly and I feel that I can even sing in front of the whole world if I am given the opportunity! Thanks to the Girl Power because for assure it has empowered me .

When I joined Huruma Girls I met different people form different social backgrounds Apparently none of them came from the slums like I do (by the way I am Kiberan by birth and nature but not future!). I used to think I’m the only poor student and at one point I even thought I was in the wrong house but through the help of Girl Power Club, I was able to build my self confidence when I realized that it is not where I came from that matters but where I’m going that really counts. I was taught this in one of the workshops that I had been invited to at Sadili Oval in Langata. 

It has always been my dream to transform my society and I’m very grateful to the Girl Power Club for it has helped me realize that I have the power to do that every day! One thing I always tell my friends is that I don’t think I can do it! My fellow girls,  the time for doubting yourself has passed, this is the right time to work and stand up for everything that is right for you! Thank you very much GIRL POWER for making a great transformation in my life. Please come sometimes to watch me play or visit my school

Please warn my teacher not to touch me every time he passes my my desk

Please do not send me alone to do your errands early morning or late evening

Please remember that man who comes to visit you could also be coming to watch me and my sister(s). We need your interest and protection.

Please ask yourself why I do not like school anymore, and why many girls in my team are pregnant or have babies.

''I Have A Ball'' Workshop

''I Have A Ball - Workshop.
You Have The Right to Know Yourself'' 
Saturday 24th of March 2012 was a big day for the Girl Power Clubs members three events running in one day: a workshop, football tournament and a medical camp! 215 girl leaders from 23 Secondary Schools around Nairobi City attended the event.Workshop.
The event that hosted 215 girls at the Sadili Oval Sports Academy was coordinated by Ja Young Naphtalie Margaret (Project Assistant) and Dr. Mwaka Mutsumi (Project Assistant) and was graced by Dr. Catherine Akidi Labobo Lore of KEMWA (Kenya Women Medical Asssociation) who led the main health discussion on reproductive health. There was also a Nutrition talk by Nutritionist from Xenihealth Nutrition and Weight Loss Management Programme who gave an interesting discussion on eating well and the workshop discussions ended with LVCT Kenya's Annrose Kibutha giving a small talk on the importance of HIV tesing and counseling.

Soccer Tournament
 Running concurrently was 7-a-side, each 15 minutes soccer tournament that was officiated by FIFA-trained referees.
The girls gave a thrilling display of talent in the field which was also attended by several media houses that were very impressed at how well girls can play and the new comers Olympic High School made their mark in lifting the day's football ''I have a ball'' trophy  presented to them by Girl Power's Dr. Elizabeth Odera after scooping a 3-0 win against Malezi School who settled for second place.

Girl Power Clubs did manage to erect tents and provide rooms for free medical consultation and dispensing of drugs with the help of 11 young female doctors and pharmacists, thanks to the hard work put in by Dr. Mwaka Mutsumi (Project Assistant), Dr. Odula and the entire KEMWA (Kenya Medical Women Association).

HIV/AIDS TESTING AND COUNSELING

Liverpool VCT,were overwhelmed by the high turn-out of girls who wanted to either be tested, ask questions and learn more. Annrose and her team were very pleased with the positive attitude and openness that many girls displayed! When she asked them about this, a few replied, "We want to have enough knowledge about ourselves so that we have the power to decide how to manage our bodies.

Girl Power Leadership Workshop

''I HAVE A BALL'' GIRL LEADERS WORKSHOP

Girl leaders form different Girl Power Clubs meet at Sadili Oval Sports Academy's members lounge to mark the year's first girls meeting. The workshop whose purpose was to have the girls intodeuced to the year's activities and equipped with the necessarry skills needed to help them through leadership.

Vital skills such as servant leadership, the value of team work, communication,integrity, honesty and alot more was learnt.

Begining with a Health talk by Dr. Mwaka Mutsumi (one of our project assistants) followed by a movie session by JaYoung Naphtalie Margaret (our project assistant) where the girls watched an inspiring movie ''The Invictus'' which depicted one of Africa's greatest heros, Nelson Mandela and his term as president of South Africa. Helping the girls through the discussion session where important lessons were drawn was done by guest speaker,Ms.Pauline Nyawira and assisted by JaYoung Naphtalie Margaret.

The day climaxed with founder, Dr.Elizabeth Odera take the girls through introduction to ''I have A Ball'' as which was combined with one one health talk session with the help of Dr. Mwaka Mutsumi. Girls expressed their thoughts, shared their views, exchanged ideas and learnt of very many health facts and found clarification on many health topics in the focus topics of Menstration and Abortion and how girls are affected.

Ending the eventfull day were rules the girls came up with that would later guide them in their new competition ''I Have A Ball'', thereafter the girls were given new balls that they will use in their respective chosen sports, received their participation certificates and a group photo! This one day workshop also marked the begining of campaings for SISTERHOOD WORLD CUP 2012!

What Is ''I Have A Ball'' Campaign

"I Have A Ball is a unique way for girls to express themselves without fear for stigma and victimasition is through sports. They are encourages to find creative ways to do it, by expressing an important issue in their community, and it must be around a sport ball. The type of ball does not really matter, soccer, basketball, volleyball or tennis. "I Have A Ball" is one such initiative by Girl Power Clubs Africa where girls present life-skills in a ball game that they play as a team and highlight issues they face most, how it affects them, what can, should or wish could be done.

 Rules for participating in the competition.
 1. A ball must be part of the presentation
 2. The game must include 5 - 12 participants at maximum
 3. Parts of the game

       > Demonstration 
       > List of requirements
       > The act (sport or game), must show a life skill
       > Must show conclusion
