 HOW THE GIRL POWER CLUB HAS HELPED ME

HURUMA GIRLS SECONDARY SCHOOL

My name is Christine Madarah a form three student at Huruma Girls. I joined the Girl  Power late last year and I must say it has been of great help not only to me but also to  the entire school.

The Girl Power club has taught me a lot. A lot of knowledge that I need to equipmyself with as a young growing lady. The club has enabled me to achieve more that  I thought I would never achieve like for instance before I joined the club I couldeven stand before my class (of fifty) well , this is due to my level of shyness and ofcourse my low self esteem! Fortunately all this all this changed when I joined theclub because there, I was able to realize that the whole world starts with me andtherefore I had to be courageous and had to face it.(As I am righting this I have justsang in front of the whole school at the assembly and can even do it in front of thewhole world if I have the opportunity). Thanks to the Girl Power because for assureit has empowered me .

When I joined Huruma Girls I met different people form different social backgrounds  Apparently none of them came from the slums like I do (by the way I am kiberian by  birth and nature but not future!). So I used to think I’m the only poor student and atone point I even thought I was in the wrong house but through the help of Girl Power club I was able to build up my self confidence and was able to realize that itwas not where I came from that matters but where I’m going really counts. I wastaught this in one of the programmes that I had been invited to at Sadili in Langata. Because of the self confidence I have I’m ashamed of telling the whole world I’mcoming from Kibera slums because I know that’ not where I belong.

It has always been my dream to transform my society and I’m very grateful to theGirl Power club for it has helped me realize that I have the power! One thing I always  tell my friends is that I don’t think I can do it! Now , I have the power to do what I want to do therefore, my fellow girls the time to think or doubt themselves haspassed so this is the right time to work and stand up for everything that is right forthem.
