Girl Power Sports Day Successfully held at Sadili Oval

It was fun and excitement as 45 Girl Power Club members from Nazarene and St. Catherine’s Primary schools gathered at Sadili Oval for their Sports Day on 17th June 2017. The weather was great and all activities were carried out outdoors.

The day kicked off with an insightful life skills session on ‘Body Image’ facilitated by staff (Social educators) including Trizah Mboya, Aurelia Mito, June Etyang, Philippa Mtamira and Jemimah Manga. The onset of puberty causes many body changes that can attract the attention of others as well as initiate critical self-analysis in a young person. This interest in appearance is driven by a strong need to be accepted and to fit in, and it’s particularly common among adolescent girls. These girls often don’t get the forum to openly discuss what they feel about body image and yet, its effects on self-esteem can be especially powerful during the teenage years. It is for this reason that the Social educators sought to use this sports day to address this important but often ignored aspect of growth. They sent out a powerful message on the importance of self-love and self-acceptance and answered all the questions the girls had.

The life skills session was followed by sports where the girls, together with Sadili staff,  had a chance to play football, rugby, netball and basketball. The girls were divided into four groups and by the end of the event, each person had played every sport. The day ended with a delicious lunch that was enjoyed by everyone.

“I have enjoyed myself so much, and learnt a lot about appreciating and taking care my body,” commented Esther Akinyi, a pupil at Nazarene Primary school. “I wish it could go on longer than it did!”

Our Girl Power Sport Days are organized to bring together Girl Power Clubs from various schools to participate in sports and acquire important life skills in a collaborative learning atmosphere.

We are grateful to all the partcipants and everyone who worked hard to sees this day successful.

Wonderful Week of Sports for Girl power Clubs

The past week (27th February-3rd March), we had an amazing sport week for Girl Power clubs at the comfort of their schools. This deviates from the norm where we always have one-day event sports days, usually at Sadili Oval Sports Academy.

We hoped to have the sports done with all Girl Power Clubs in the 6 schools in Nairobi. However, this being a busy period in the school calendar with most schools either having midterm examinations or on midterm break, we had the pleasure of having the sports at Karama Academy and St. Catherine Primary only.

Soccer at Karama Academy on Tuesday 28th February was fantastic. The hot and sunny weather did not stop the girls from having fun. They were divided into two teams: A & B. Team A proved to be stronger after winning 1-0 against team B. The girls were so thrilled to have a whole one hour of nothing but soccer. They even begged for extra time at the end of the game!

We were so lucky at St. Catherine’s Primary School on Wednesday 1st March as we had teachers coming in to work with us. Here too the girls played soccer and were divided into teams A & B. The game ended with a nil-nil draw, but that did not matter. What mattered was that everyone participated and that all the girls enjoyed it.

The Girl Power Sport Week is an initiative to offer sport participation opportunities in a term that’s too busy to run our usual monthly Sports Days. Instead the activities are split into one huge week and students have the opportunity to participate in sports at the comfort of their schools.

Program On Inspite Of Teachers' Strike

The month of September ushers in the third term in the Kenyan education calendar. It is usually a very short and busy term characterized by the end year exam and the national examinations for the o-levels and a- levels (Std 8 and Form 4). This term has also had a hiccup: teachers have been on strike countrywide since schools opened. This has disrupted the normal running of the schools, particularly public schools. Private schools despite this continue to function normally.

We have managed to continue with our sessions in the private schools and organized sessions with the girls in the public schools privately. The session in the public schools have not been consistent but we still continue to schedule convenient meeting with them so that we can cover as much as we can.
In most schools the KCPE and KCSE examination candidates who have been attending the sessions have stopped attending thus the drastic reduction in numbers of attendance.
